Grassroots led organizations in the fore front of organizing and preparation for upcoming Africities

Winam grassroots through Huariou commission and partners have in the past organized forums for articulating matters on Safety, Economic justice, and equality. Rally call for sustainable communities and cities within the NEW URBAN AGENDA FRAMEWORK, Grassroots led organizations have organized numerous grassroots academies, and urban thinkers Campus in Kisumu of which the desire was to have meaningful engagement during the Summit, gender equality and women’s empowerment activities, and ensure Kenyan grassroots women participation.

Sustainable Development Goal 11 focuses on Making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable. intermediary cities are fast developing as hubs for ideas, commerce, culture, science, productivity, social development and much more. SDGs Goal 5 promote gender equality and empowerment of women and girls, these goals are in tandem with the New Urban Agenda which affirms a vision of cities for all, referring to the equal use, and enjoyment of cities and human settlements, seeking to promote inclusivity for all inhabitants, of the present and future generations, without discrimination of any kind.

The 9th edition of Africities will provide an opportunity for acceleration of gender equality, amplify voices of grassroots women within intermediary cities and shape policy conversations during the summit.

We envision debates to address;

  • Effective participation of women in quality governance that promotes inclusivity and accountability to it citizens
  • Creating opportunity through legislation and provision of resources to anchor and support women business post covid 19.
  • Access of public space and security of tenure both small scale business and affordable housing for women to promote Economic and social Justice
  • Safety of Women, girls, and vulnerable persons in the intermediary cities
